DANCE LESSONS PROVIDED BY?
At the 1:10 mark of Daydream Believer, you are gonna see the dance that made Davey famous. Fast forward 20 years and watch Axl copy the dance in one of their most famous videos (as seen here at the 50 second mark). In fact, William Bailey derived his dance moves by ripping off Richard Black of Shark Island (Paris Calling) back in the late 80s. Look at the similarities of this video and compare it to the one featured below. Not convinced. Read this creepy story in a recent interview with lead singer Richard Black (8th question) of the revived Shark Island.
IT WAS JUST A JOKE

This photo was taken at Madam Wong's at the time that the band was Hollywood Rose in June 1984. Less than a year later, they would change their name to Guns N Roses.
After a New Year's party, Axl, Slash and company were goofing around during a practice session and Slash began to play a riff which he described as "circus music". This was his interpretation of a calliope or circus chatter as seen here. Now watch and listen to the song that came out of this joke. While playing this famous riff, Slash, aka Saul Hudson, was making funny faces at Steven Adler, the original drummer of GNR and Axl, aka William Bailey, told him to continue playing it as he belted out some lyrics. Click here to see what resulted and pay special attention to the opening guitar solo. The song was written about Axl's girlfriend at the time Erin Everly. The video was taped in an abandoned theater in L.A and the guitar he used was a 1991 Les Paul Goldtop which was ripped off over 10 years ago and never seen again.
Fact: In September 1984, Axl auditions for the group Poison and is turned down. He is perceived as being "out-of-control" and rowdy. Duh..really.
Fact: For many years, Slash hated playing this song because it was intended to be a joke. The techinque is called string skipping but he has come to appreciate its popularity.
NAMING THE BAND

Name changed to Guitars R Us.
Why is this photos significant? Guns N Roses wanted to create a name for the band using a mix of their former name Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns (Tracii Guns was an original member but then quit only days before a major tour). The band had frequented Guitars R Us many times and decided to cut and paste the names together in much the same fashion as the guitar store. The rest is history.

Originally known as Image Guitars
TRIVIA QUESTION:
NAME A BAND THAT HAS AT LEAST 2 BROTHERS OR SISTERS IN IT? HINT:
HERE ARE SOME PHOTOS. SOME OF THESE ARE TOUGH.

This last one is tough...band had a big MTV and radio hit "Steal My Sunshine" back in 1999. Can you name the band? Check out this video...you probably heard it and the beat sounds familiar (from a 70s hit). Ok..so if you got that part, I challenge you. Name the song or the group that the band copied (also known as sampling and taken from the 2:20 mark of the video) to make the video. Hint: 70s Disco Hit. Give up? Check out the answer here.
Tidbits: The video was filmed in a city I have been going to for almost 30 years, Daytona Beach, Florida. It was filmed on and near the Boardwalk which has since had a major face lift. The restaurant that you see in the opening scene is Graziano's Ristorante and is still there today. I spent a lot of time on this spot luring vacationers into timeshare resorts. The pier has been cut in half by a couple of hurricanes and the Needle Ride has been shut down due to funding issues and repair cost. This is a great place to vacation and you can still drive on the beach in some areas. Back in the 80s, we would drive on the beach at night to avoid DUI convictions. Hah..
Did you know: The original 70s video was filmed in
Jamaica. The band was trapped in the country due to a political situation which
allowed nobody to leave the island with Jamaican currency. They cut the video,
using local talent and money from the US and released it in Jamaica. Eventually,
it hit the states and she made more than her money back and was able to leave
Jamaica (she was originally brought down to the island to do a real estate
commercial). The lead singer appeared in nearly 60 adult films during her
career(listen closely to the lyrics..."how do you like your love?").
Don't feel sorry for her though - she's quite content that her biggest song she
wrote is still raking in the dough on numerous disco and one-hit wonder comps
and she has a sense of humour about the road her life has taken, saying in a VH1
interview she wants to be remembered as someone who, "gave
people pleasure... with my music."
AFTER AND BEFORE - NAME THE ARTIST AND THEIR BAND

WHO IS THIS BAND?

DEEP PURPLE
featured two great musicians, Ian Guillen and Ritchie Blackmore. Not much has
been known about the inner turmoil between them until this interview.....a bit
of a scary threat at the end by Ritchie. Ian still tours with Deep Purple while
Ritchie has turned his back on the past and now performs in Blackmore Nights, a
rock opera style performance with his wife. For such a heavy metal legend, this
seems quite tame.
Check out this interesting dual interview
Check out this video of Ritchie and his wife Candice. Don't laugh. He's going to attempt to explain to you how he justifies Candy emasculating him and turning him into a folk guitarist. Look what he is wearing...you gotta be kidding me. This is the legendary Ritchie Blackmore - arguably one of the best and legendary rock guitarists

The early days of DIO. Check out Ritchie the Pilgrim

Who Am I?

Name this guitarist? Hint: Left G&R for Velvet Revolver. Graces the cover of Guitar Hero III
Ok: That was easy. Now what is his real name?
Answer: Bottom of Page

Name the guitarist? Hint: Played in Dio, Journey and currently with Def Leppard?
Click here for an EXPLICIT answer. Warning: Profanity and honesty are widely used in this clip. Ronnie James Dio and this guitarist had a falling out years ago and evidently the relationship is still strained - to say the least. 2nd warning. This is a candid video of Ronnie as he signs autographs after a gig.

DO YOU KNOW THIS BAND?
Their lead singer is probably better known than the band itself and he is as strange and aloof as David Byrne of the Talking Heads. The band's name was Wall of Voodoo and the singer's name is Stan Ridgway. Can you name their most famous MTV video and hit? Here it is . Stan explains the story behind the song.
"I remember going to rehearsals in my Mustang, trying to
find Mexican radio stations wafting in over the border, because we liked the
idea of listening to something we didn't understand. Then Marc came in one day
with this chorus, mumbling into a tape recorder, ‘I'm on a Mexican radio,
I'm on a radio...,' and from there we built it. Everyone else threw in
their stuff too, Joe Nanini's great percussion, and Chas Gray on the Moog."
The infamous lyric about "eating barbecued iguana" was one of
Ridgway's own contributions. "I had not eaten any," he adds quickly,
"but they say it tastes like chicken. "I think I wrote those lyrics in
about 10 minutes at my apartment while Marc and Chas were in the other room,
trying to get the Oberheim EightVoice sequencer to make that noise, the little dadda-dee-dadda-deet-dadda-dee-dadda-deet
[heard as the song begins].
During the video you will hear some Spanish speaking announcements. Most of them are actually disc jockeys from across the border. Stan was often perplexed when he would tune into a Mexican radio station one day and then the next, it had completely disappeared. Evidently, the radio waves bounce off the Southern California mountains and are very unpredictable.
The little black dog you see throughout the video was a Tijuana souvenir that Stan picked up along with a hawk, a little baby and a snake. Stan explains. "I took 'em all home and put 'em on the living room rug. After a while the dog started to work its way out of the crowd. I liked the dog because it was a solitary figure. It didn't look as if it had any opinion one way or the other about its environment; it just looked solid and steady."
Stan still tours. If you want more details about what he is doing and where he will be, please visit
RONNIE JAMES DIO
1) The metal sign that
Ronnie is holding up here was, in fact, introduced by him many years ago. Here
is his explanation: "I was in [Black] Sabbath at the time. The
gesture was a symbol that I thought was reflective of what that band was
supposed to be all about. It's NOT the devil's sign like we're here with the
devil. It's an Italian thing I got from my Grandmother. It's to ward off the
Evil Eye or to give the Evil Eye, depending on which way you do it. It's just a
symbol but it had magical incantations and attitudes to it and I felt it worked
very well with Sabbath. So I became very noted for it and then everybody else
started to pick up on it and away it went. But I would never say I take credit
for being the first to do it." If he
didn't create it back in 1979, who did?
This guy? No....! It is called Corna in Italy and has many meanings that
actually date back to Ancient Greece. Bored? Read this Wikipedia insert on The
Corna
2)What is Ronnie's real name? Ronald James Padovana
3)Name the bands that RJD was in? Vegas Kings, Electric Elves, eventually becoming ELF(at this point, Ronnie was concentrating on vocals instead of playing bass and officially changed his name), Rainbow featuring Ritchie Blackmore, Black Sabbath and DIO(solo project. Check out this 1983 video .
4)Can you name the other band members of the original DIO? Vinny Appice on drums, Vivian Campbell on lead guitar and Jimmy Bain on bass. Vivian went on to play in Def Leppard and Whitesnake and currently resides in Southern California and is the next door neighbor to Danny Bonaduce. Their kids play together......for now. Danny is currently going through divorce proceedings.
THIS CAR ROCKS!
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. One of the best movies ever made. Remember the car that was featured in the movie - you know the 1961 Ferrari 250GT that was owned by Cameron's dad. Ok, click here for that scene and prepare for some useless trivia.
The vehicle on the left is the real deal. The one on the right was actually a modified MGB. 4 of them were used in the film and were created by Modena Design and Development of El Cajon, CA which was eventually sued by Ferrari for the unlicensed use of the logos and decals. Cameron states that there were about 100 made and in fact, Ferrari records indicate there were 54. T. At the time of the movie, Cameron states that it is worth $265,000. Today, this car is worth between 2-4 million bucks depending on condition.
So you think you know the movie?
1)What is the name of the Principal?
2) What is his car license plate?
2)What is the license plate of the Ferrari?
4)Who played Ferris Bueller?
5)Who was the idiot that turned down the rolls of Cameron in this movie and Duckie in "Pretty in Pink" because he didn't want to be typecast?

Van Halen's Worst Video - After the "Invasion", Van Halen released this "easy to cover" single along with a video. They had released an album every year between 1978-1983 and wanted to make a video for the MTV fans . The video appears to be an after thought from the record company and was done to satisfy those fans who were tuning in to MTV for their Van Halen music - remember in 1982, MTV was very new, unproven and not expected to succeed by many. This was their very first one and it eventually got banned for a while due to the opening scene with the midgets. The intro the song is a guitar and synthesizer collaboration called "Intruder". Look at the font and lettering layout of "Van Halen" during the first scene - ripped off from the opening foreword of the Star Wars movie. This is by far their first and worst video.
Other banned videos on MTV
Oh) Pretty Woman - Van Halen Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B. Hawkins
He Liked To Feel It - The Crash Test Dummies Hey Mister - Custom Jesus Christ Pose - Soundgarden
Juicebox - The Strokes Justify My Love - Madonna Laquer Head - Primus No Way Out - Stone Temple Pilots
Pop Song '89 - R.E.M. Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood This Note's For You - Neil Young
What It Feels Like For A Girl - Madonna You're All I Need - Motley Crue
Name the video and the artist that MTV dubbed as "The Worst Video Of All Time"? Incidentally, in the running for this coveted title, was a previous band that has been featured on the rock page - Flock of Seagulls and their hit I Ran (thrown together in a warehouse with tin foil, mirrors and a last minute hair-styling malfunction by lead singer Mike Score).
Hints: 1)The same song was covered by the band After the Fire in 1983 2)The song was almost entirely sung in German by Johann (Hans) Hölzel. 3) He found more success in Europe than the U.S. but left a big blue mark in the 80's pop culture. 4) His biggest hit was Rock Me Amadeus - I think I just gave it away. Still don't know?
And the winner
is here.
Tragically, he died at age 40 in
a SUV vs. bus accident near Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. He is buried
at the Zentralfriedof in Vienna, Austria
A Tribute to one of the best blue guitarists of all time. Who is he? He put Austin, Texas on the musical map and was originally discovered by Johnny Winter. His band's name was originally called The Cobras then Triple Threat and later becoming known as Double Trouble. His idols were Albert King, Freddie Collins, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and of course, Jimmy Hendrix. If you 5 minutes or so, get a shot of your favorite Kentucky Bourbon and watch this piece. Makes me want to kick the cat, wreck the truck and stumble down to J.J. Blues and pull up a stool (maybe I should reword that).
